Kate Gilmore & Karen Heagle ‘BEAT’

On Stellar Rays

8 January 17 - 19 February 17

They said don’t come around here.
Don’t want to see your face.
You better disappear.
The fire’s in their eyes.
Their words are really clear.
Beat it.

You better do what you can.
Don’t want to see blood.
You want to be tough.
Do what you can.
Beat it.

No one wants to be defeated.
Showing how strong is your fight.
It matters who’s wrong or right.
Beat it.

They’re out to get you.
Leave while you can.
You want to stay alive.
Do what you can.
Beat it.

You have to show them that you’re really not scared.
They’re playing with your life.
This is not truth or dare.
They’ll kick you.
Then they beat you.
Then they’ll tell you it’s fair.
Beat it.

No one wants to be defeated.
Showing how strong is your fight.
It matters who’s wrong or who’s right.

Beat it.

– Adaptation of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” from Thriller (1982).

The practice of Kate Gilmore spans video, sculpture, photography, performance, and installation, exploring female identity and the physical constraints of material. The artist and her performers are protagonists, attempting to conquer self-constructed obstacles, an embodiment of the emotion, fury, and frustration borne of an unsettling political moment.

Karen Heagle is known for her vivid large scale works on paper that depict still life, landscape, portraiture and animal subjects. Her work often reflects autobiographical symbolism thematically focused on memento mori, feminism, sexuality, and queer identity.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE – Every Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
