It’s always gratifying when June arrives and the Basel week is suddenly on our minds. The crazy days of Basel are often the best of the year. After all the efforts to survive the winter season, we feel deeply satisfied to arrive at the Central Bahnhof and keep up with the tradition of tasting one of the city’s delights – the soft pretzels.
This year we came to Basel just to discover the next protagonists of the art world. Welcome to Liste! A place to meet the artists in person – whether at the fair booths in front of their works or at the terrace bars accompanied by a beer.
Officially considered the first of the independent art fairs, Liste celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016 and has now a solid reputation in the art world. However, we wonder if Liste is, at this moment, still dedicated to emerging artists and galleries. It could be natural that after 20 years some of the exhibitors are now established galleries presenting established artists. Among 79 exhibitors from 34 countries, we have selected a few proposals for our readers: from solo shows and fully balanced presentations to galleries that took the plunge to display site-specific artworks. In this selection, we found a true cooperation between artists and gallerists – a reassurance that this approach confirms Liste as one of the best independent art fairs in the world.
So, if you are in Basel this week, we encourage you to take a look at the highlights of the fair. (Don’t forget to try the amazing sausage bar at the entrance – in our opinion one of the best in town.)
