‘New Work’

Balcony

20 September 17 - 11 November 17

THE CELEBRATION TEXT
(or a positivist point of view)

If something new emerges it should be celebrated. Because this is intrinsically in accordance with the proper movement of the reality: static values and static things just don’t exist in the world. The opening of The New Gallery in Lisbon is in consent with this dynamic and with the knowledge of the present moment requests: the need to proceed.

The enlargement and the renewal of contemporary art system (in Portugal) are natural effects of the specific terms of not only a social, economic and political, but also a thematic and conceptual time, which contaminates artist’s thoughts and gestures. So if Balcony opens its doors in Lisbon today – with its own ambitions and goals – this necessarily allows us to understand that it is crucial to proceed. The new work and the represented artists are all a statement of Present, and they should all be properly integrated with everything that in art is previous and simultaneous to them.

It’s time to celebrate. For many reasons: 1) it’s new work emerging, work with potential to be seen, assimilated and shared, work that helps – in its own purpose – on clarifying things, which adds more layers of reading, further experiences, just like art does; 2) the art gallery is this space that gives the artist legit autonomy to get himself all into the work and so be dedicated to what truly pushes him and which is his particular contribution to the human progress – and we all have interests on it; 3) today the Portuguese art system has one more strength of respect for work, for artists and for the potential of what is done here and now; 4) work for the renewal of things is to be aligned with life and committed with the need to proceed.

“New Work”, that’s it. In other words: it is the true reason for the existence of The New Gallery. The work of these artists: Binelde Hyrcan, Dealmeida Esilva, Horácio Frutuoso, Nikolai Nekh and Tiago Alexandre is asking for answers and Balcony is just one possibility of materialization; is the renewal agenda being realized. So we have some reasons to celebrate today.

Artists: Binelde Hyrcan, Dealmeida Esilva, Horácio Frutuoso, Nikolai Nekh and Tiago Alexandre.
